Chapter Four

Erik blinked awake, his eyes darting around the bedroom. Lexi’s overwhelming honey-vanilla scent hit him hard. He wasn’t sure at what point they’d fallen asleep, but he could tell by the soft, even breaths coming from Lexi she was sound asleep. Her plump breasts pressed against his chest, causing him to harden instantly. He needed her again. They needed to perform a proper mating ritual. I have to tell her the truth about me before we do that. She needs to know I’m a werewolf.

Mating wasn’t something to take lightly and he wouldn’t force her into his life. She needed to make the decision to be his mate herself. Closing his eyes and breathing in her intoxicating scent, he attempted to go back to sleep.

A small squeak followed by crunching gravel filtered in through the closed window. His eyes flew open, and he sat up quickly. Lexi stirred, rolled over, but didn’t wake. Erik narrowed his eyes as he grabbed his jeans and slipped them on. He crept to the window and peered out.

A dark shadow darted across the backyard moving toward the house. Erik blinked, allowing his eyes to transition. Using his heightened senses he watched as another four-legged figure stalked through the yard. Wolves were here. Why? Whatever their reason, it couldn’t be good.

He tiptoed to Lexi gathering her clothes as he went. “Lexi, wake up,” he said softly as he touched her warm shoulder.

“What?” she mumbled as her eyes blinked open.

“Get up! Get dressed, now,” he urged, thrusting her garments at her. They needed to get out of here.

“Why?” Lexi asked confused. Her brows quirked up in question as she yawned and sat up.

Erik placed a finger to her lips. “Quiet. Someone’s outside. Get Seth,” he whispered, meeting her eyes.

Lexi swallowed as she took the clothes he offered to her. Her mouth popped open and eyes widened.

“What are you doing?” she hissed, catching his hand as he started toward the door.

“It’s going to be okay,” he said cupping her chin and placing a kiss to her forehead. “Get Seth. Be ready to run. I’ll be back.”

Lexi nodded, and he pulled away. He snatched his cell out of his pocket and typed a quick text to Adam. Then crept into the hall and slowly down the stairs. Whoever was out there didn’t need to know he was on to them. He drew in a deep breath, trying to place the scents. The only smell that greeted him was grass and dirt. The intruders had deliberately masked their scent. Snarling under his breath, he closed his eyes and listened.

Paws padded across the earth followed by human footsteps. Two wolves and one human. He was outnumbered, but as long as there weren’t more he felt confident he could defend his family until help arrived. I won’t let anything happen to Lexi and Seth.

His phone buzzed with a new text from Adam. A team was on their way. Ten minutes. He could hold the wolves off as long as needed. He snuck to the front door, checking to make sure the lock was in place.
